The Diné live in a high desert, with snow in the winter and hot summers. Their staples were corn, beans and squash and raised sheep and goats. They lived in single family, one room hogans. They are matrilineal and matrilocal. They are extremely non-hierarchical and individualistic and had no chiefs. They were regularly victims of slave raids by Ute, and Comanche who sold them to the Spanish. They had taboos against eating fish or food from the water. They did not have boats. They are known for weaving rugs and blankets, jewelry, baskets and pottery. Today there are 300,000 on 27,000 square miles and about 75% speak the language. Their traditional ceremonies are alive and much performed. They are well known for the sand paintings that are part of healing ceremonies.
