Well, in America's early times, when kids were in a schoolhouse, the girls would have to keep their arms straight out and hold books on their hands.(experience: went on a field trip to an old school house- demonstrated girls punishment)
A lot of the time children who committed crimes whether they were severe or not were whipped, hung, or stoned to death. Talking back/cursing at your parents usually resulted in the same punishment. I'm sure there may have been more punishments used though.
