The tremendous appeal of evangelical Christianity in the late 18th century can be attributed to its emphasis on personal conversion and a direct relationship with God, which resonated deeply with individuals seeking spiritual fulfillment during a time of social and political upheaval. The movement's focus on emotional experiences and community support provided a sense of belonging and purpose. Additionally, the rise of print culture facilitated the spread of evangelical ideas, making them accessible to a broader audience across both sides of the Atlantic. The promise of salvation and hope in a rapidly changing world also offered a compelling alternative to the established religious norms of the time.
The growth of evangelical Protestantism was rapid in the 19th century US. In part this was fueled by the perception of urban ungodliness. Clovis's conversion to Christianity in the late 5th century was significant because it marked the beginning of the Christianization of the Frankish kingdom, which laid the foundation for the future expansion of Christianity in Western Europe. Unlike Constantine, who converted in the early 4th century primarily to unify the Roman Empire and gain political advantage, Clovis's conversion was deeply personal and tied to his military victories, as he believed God aided him in battle. Both conversions, however, were pivotal in shaping the relationship between church and state, influencing the political landscape of their respective regions.
