The time in which the action takes place is what sets the standard for the music and the staging in "Wicked."

Specifically, the musical is based upon the novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" by Gregory Maguire (b. June 9, 1954) and the children's book "The Wizard of Oz" by Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 - May 6, 1919). .Neither book includes information as to the years in which events take place. But a very late nineteenth-century setting may be assumed given a 1900 publication date for "The Wizard of Oz." It was decided from meetings of composer/lyricist Stephen Lawrence Schwartz (b. March 6, 1948) and script writer Winnie Holzman (b. 1954) with the novelist of "Wicked" that the action, music and setting could be updated well into the twentieth century.
