If that child is indeed caught shoplifting, there would only be one charge. That charge would result in a more severe punishment, however, and depending on the age of the child, would either go to Juvenile hall or if the child is too young, than the charges would be put on the parents.
There are some children that shoplift because either someone dared them to do so or, they are simply spreading their wings to see if they can get away with it. Generally if caught by a store Manager he or she will put a scare into the child; most phone the parents and if a minor and there is no threat from the shoplifter theft charges are generally not given to a child under the age of 18. If it is a teen shoplifting and they have stolen from the same store or happen to get a cranky Manager the police could be brought into it and the parents phoned.

Murder in the First (1995) depicts the cruelty that Henri Young faced at the hands of the assistant warden at Alcatraz Federal Prison. The 17-year-old orphan was caught stealing $5.00 he needed to feed himself and his younger sister. The store doubled as a U.S. Post Office, which meant he faced federal charges for robbing a post office. The movie stars Kevin Bacon as Henri Young, Christian Slater as his attorney, James Stamphill, and Gary Oldman as Milton Glenn, the assistant warden. The movie is based on the real criminal, but the plot is mostly fiction. Amongst other things, the real Young was not convicted of stealing $5.00 from a post office.

You would need to prove that their accusation was false, that they communicated this accusation to others, and that it resulted in quantifiable damages. It is advisable to consult with a lawyer to discuss the specifics of your case and determine the best course of action.
No, you can't steal ANYTHING from Walmart or any other store. Stealing is stealing and you will be taken to jail. the bigger question is why would you steal small stuff? If you are a big enough douche-bag to steal why not go for the money? Have some balls and do it right so when you are caught you can do real time.
They definitely would get fired and might be told they can never work at any store for the company- but they also would possibly be prosecuted as eating unpaid merchandise technically is stealing.
