In a way, yes. But that doesn't give them any strange powers or ability when you think about it.

If a person is 5 light years away from earth, and something really special happens on earth today,

he doesn't know about it until 5 years from today. By the time he finds out about it, the news is

5 years old. So in that sense, yes, everything he sees from earth comes from 5 years in the past.

If this is hard to focus on, you don't need to worry about it, because it's not going to happen

any time soon. Using any technology that exists today, or is even on the drawing board today,

it's going to take at least 30 years for anybody to travel 5 light years away from earth, and that

distance is still 120 million times farther than any astronaut has ever been from earth so far.
