There are several interesting points here.

First, we do not yet have any detailed information on the structure of lunar mountains. They appear to be quite jagged and peak-y compared to many terrestrial mountains. There have been a grand total of SIX human visits to the Moon, with the longest taking a mere 3 days. All of them were in valleys and "seas"; so far, no man has hiked any lunar mountain. Nor will we for many decades to come.

Second, the Moon is old and cold, without an active tectonic core. The only mountain-building process on the Moon has been impact craters, and this has been true for a billion years. Earth, on the other hand, has numerous active volcanoes and experienced hundreds of earthquakes every day.

Third, terrestrial mountains experience considerable weathering from, well, "weather"; rain, snow, and wind. Lunar peaks are likely to be as sharp as broken glass.

Why does the earth show a smooth surface in the photograph despite of high mountains and villages?

The surface features of the earth "disappear" as one gets farther from it. It has to do with resolution. In general, if the earth was viewed from the moon without an optical aid, no surface features would be visible save clouds, oceans, land masses, and the like. And not for sure on all of them, either. Some will be seen and some of them will not be clearly distinguishable. But with a big telescope - bam! There's home! Sometimes when we look at a picture of the earth taken from space we may, without realizing it, begin to view a portion of it with "the mind's eye" instead of looking at the photo. We "know" what is there, even if we can't "see" it in the pic, can't make it out or resolve it. Lastly, a six mile high mountain isn't that much compared to a ball of material that is about 8000 miles in diameter....

Why are mountains jagged?

Mountains are jagged because that is how they are formed. As they get older, erosion will begin to smooth them out so they appear rounder.

Is earth smooth?

Earth is relatively smooth compared to many other small planets and planetoids. It is not smooth from a purely human perspective. For anyone who has hiked to the peaks in Glacier Park, and then realized that there are mountains three times as high, the world does not appear smooth. The roughness on the earth's surface (mountains and valleys) amounts to about 1/1000 of the earth's radius, which makes it pretty smooth as planets go.

How can you tell if a mountain is old or young?

If the mountain has jagged edges and lots of exposed rock, it is most likely young. Older mountains have been worn smooth by wind and weather and appear to be more rounded. In the United States, the Appalachians in the east are very old mountains and are generally very rounded and smooth in appearance. In the west, the mountains are jagged and are relatively young mountains.
