The correct term for New Zealand greenstone is Pounamu. Pounamu is only found in Aotearoa New Zealand. Jade, Greenstone and Nephrite are common names for this particularly tough mineral. It is found in Canada, South America and China and is commercially mined in some of these locations. If it is not from Aotearoa New Zealand it cannot be called Pounamu. There are four main varieties of Pounamu: Kawakawa, Kahurangi, Inanga,and Tangiwai. The first three are nephrite and the fourth is bowenite. There is no Jadeite in Aotearoa New Zealand.
