In One Tree Hill Season 5 why cant Nathan walk?

He cannot walk because while celebrating his achievements in Basketball at a bar he gets into a fight with a guy there. The guy said something about how his wife is fat and ugly, something like that, and Nathan gets angry(he's also a little tipsy while this is going on too). Lucas convinces Nathan this guy isn't worth getting into a fight with, so they decide to leave the bar. Lucas leaves for a minute to go find the limo, but Nathan hears the guy saying stuff in the bar like "He just punched me!" and stuff like that just trying to get Nathan in trouble. Nathan just can't handle standing out there listening to it so he runs back into the bar and tells the guy he would be knocked out cold if he hit him. So then the guy gets mad and starts throwing punches, then everyone joins in and pretty soon a bunch of people gain up on Nathan. Someone punches him so hard he flies straight through the window and lands on the street. Lucas comes running back around the corner and Nathan says that he can't feel his legs. They later find out that Nathan is partially paralyzed, and that it'll take a while and a lot of strength for him to be able to walk again. But don't worry, with some help Nathan finally gets enough strength to walk again, but unfortunately he cannot play basketball anymore and he doesn't get his great chance to play in the NBA.
