But these would be a kind of folk art, very different from the professional theatre Shakespeare and the other professionals were doing. It is true that some of the plays performed by the professional companies were based on Biblical stories. There was a desperate need for new scripts and the Bible was as good a source of stories as any other. However, unlike the Miracle and Mystery plays which were the traditional way of performing Bible stories, these plays were intended solely to entertain, and not to induce any religious spirit.
