Because it is a prequel, and takes place before the two original games.
The prequel to Rose Red is The Diary of Ellen Rimbour. I didn't spell her last name right, but it is pronounced Rim-Bow-er. Bow as in bowing down to a king or a noble man.

Prequel. Although I'm not sure you can technically call it a prequel, since they are two completely different stories that have nothing to do with each other. A "prequel" usually depicts what led up to the events in the original movie, but the events in Red Dragon have absolutely nothing to do with the events in The Silence of the Lambs. But the events in Red Dragon are supposed to take place before the events in The Silence of the Lambs. In the last lines of Red Dragon, either Dr. Chilton or Barney (I can't remember which but I'll check later) says something like, "There's a female FBI agent here to see you. Should I tell her to go away?" and Dr. Lector asks, "What's her name?" Presumably, Clarice Starling is her name.
That would be The Lord of the Rings. It continues the saga of the One Ring. There are a couple of 'prequel' books including the Silmarillion.
