The motion picture "A Summer Place" was actually filmed at numerous locations around Northern California's coastal Monterey Peninsula. "Pine Island" was actually a fictitious 'creation' made up of footage shot in such locations as Pacific Grove, just south of Monterey and California's Point Lobos State Reserve, just a few miles south of Carmel on U.S. 1. A number of the actual vistas and structures still exist and are reasonably accessible, if you know where to look. For instance, the 'seaside cottage' that Richard Egan and Dorothy McGuire moved to after they divorced and married each other, is on Scenic Drive, running along the southward shoreline at the base of Ocean in Carmel. Many of the aquatic shots were done at various locations at the ruggedly magnificent Pt. Lobos State Reserve, some notably at near the Whaler's Cottage in the park. The 'Girls School' was actually Colton Hall in "Old Monterey" near the city's touristy Fisherman's Wharf. And the best 'hidden' shooting location is the magnificent Queen Anne mansion, "The Pine Island Inn", located at the south west corner where Lighthouse Avenue and 17-Mile-Drive intersect in Pacific Grove. The mansion and it's grounds are PRIVATE PROPERTY and a small sign warns against trespass. Still, from the macadam walkway outside the main entrance, you can get an excellent view and photo of "The Summer Place". Interestingly, getting back to the original question: "Was there really a pine island?" In one sense, the answer is "no". But, consider this: The original name of the mansion that was 'The Pine Island Inn' was....."Pinehurst". Oh, and a couple of streets down from the mansion is "Egan Avenue". Wonder where they came up with that name?
Also , the seaside cottage is a true Frank Lloyd Wright design built in 1951 for
a Della Walker. It is locally known as the "cabin on the rocks". It is still there
and beautiful as ever. It is occupied but small tours are available. Remember
when Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue ran down the steps to the beach??
