They killed Evelyn so the boys would have a REASON to unite. As you know they kill Jack but they have no reason for that. Yes I knwo I am going off topic with your question but THEY did not have a good reason to KILL jack. I mean thats not FOUR brothers with HIM dead. I mean if your gonna KILL one kill one that is not main (Like Bobby) or NOT sweet cute nice and caring (Though sexual) like Jack. But yes They killed Evelyn so that the boys had a reason to meet and the story had MEANING.

So the brothers are all kind of badasses and they are pissed. So they go to see what happened. Do some detective work, hunt down the killer. This is a great movie by the way.
