Johnny had said or at least thought that with his switchblade he would protect himself. That he would never be beat up again, that the next time someone tryed to hurt him he wouldn't let it happen. Its kinda saying that whoever messed with johnny they would be dead.... some foreshadowing..
S. E. Hinton used foreshadowing when Ponyboy was telling Cherry about when Johnny got beat up. She made it very obvious that he was gonna use it when he says, (Not exact quote, sorta summarized) "Now Johnny, who was the most law abiding of all of us, not carried a six-inch switchblade in his pocket. He would kill the next Soc who tried to hurt him. Nobody would ever hurt him like that again."
That gave me the feeling when I read it the first time that Johnny was gonna use the knife, but I didn't know how until the scene came.
S.E. Hinton, uses foreshadowing by saying:
Johnny never walked by himself after that. And Johnny ... now carried in his back pocket a six-inch switchblade. He'd use it, too, if he ever got jumped again.
By saying this, she is explaining the importance of that knife and too keep it in mind, whilst reading the intriguing chapters.
"Johnny's hand went to his back pocket and I remembered his switchblade." Page 54. Johnny had been beaten up before by the same group of Socs. It was because of that, that he started to carry a switchblade. He was afraid to be beaten up again and so used the blade that he kept in reserve. The foreshadowing includes the part of page 54 that says, "Johnny was scared to death. I mean it. He was as white as a ghost and his eyes were wild-looking, like the eyes of an animal in a trap." This is foreshadowing, because animals that are stuck in traps fight ferociously with fear to get out, and that is what Johnny did.
The Socs jump Ponyboy while he walks home alone, previewing their later attack on him and Johnny; Johnny threatens to kill anybody who jumps him again, foreshadowing his murder of Bob.
It says "He would kill the next person who jumped him." and he brings a 6-inches-long switchblade in the book. P. 34

The author, S.E. Hinton, uses Johnny's fear of the Socs and their violence at the beginning of the story to foreshadow the conflict between the two groups later on. Additionally, hints about the upcoming rumble between the Greasers and the Socs build anticipation and suspense throughout the novel. These elements of foreshadowing keep readers on edge and engaged in the story.
