Moe and Larry were the only two Stooges that stayed on during all the years they performed. The third Stooge was replaced a lot. The first one, Curly, was part of the Stooges from the start in 1934 and left in early 1947 due to severe health problems. Shemp replaced Curly in 1947. His career ended in 1956 when he died from a heart attack due to an accidentally swallowed lit cigar (he was in a taxi on his way home with a friend from a boxing match. The taxi hit a pot hole, and Shemp swallowed the cigar and immediately slumped into his friend's lap. He died one hour later) Shemp was replaced by Joe Besser from 1956-1959. The Stooges were then fired from Columbia Studios due to budget crisis. But after their shorts gained popularity by airing on TV networks, they were then rehired and Curly Joe joined the Stooges and this last trio performed from 1959 to 1975, doing a majority of full-length movies, and then shorts that were half live action, half cartoon and all in color
