The first American troops arrived in France in October 1917, setting its first camps near two Atlantic ports, Nantes and La Rochelle. An advance party had set foot near Saint Nazaire (also an Atlantic port) on the 30th of June 1917. An infantry division (US 2nd Infantry Division) was assembled and created on October 26 in Bourmont, eastern France. It fought in the battles of the Bois de Belleau (near the Chemin des Dames) and Saint-Mihiel (near Verdun).

American military activity in World War 1 was limited to France. An armistice was signed when German troops were pushed back to their own border, and therefore none of the war was fought on German soil.
