One of kings Hammurabi's accomplishments was making the code of law. one law was an eye for an eye. if u put out someones eye your i shall be put out. in babylonia. all people were affected by this law. such as a slave can own items and other slaves, property can be disposed by selling, loaning, lease, gift, donation,or pledge, and a merchant had to entrust his goods in a trading agent.
Very little in US law can be traced back to the Corpus Juris Civilis (Body of Civil Law), which was dubbed Justinian code in the 16th century. This is because this is a civil law code. It has been used by several European countries to develop a civil law code. US law, instead, has a common law system which developed out of English common law. Whilst a civil law code tries to comprehensively deal with all aspects of law, a common law system is a case law system based on precedent. The law is developed by judges through decisions of courts which decide individual cases, and these form precedents for future cases. Therefore, US law is more similar to classical Roman law than the Corpus Juris Civilis/Justinian Code. In the early days of the US, the Institutiones part of the Corpus Juris Civilis was often cited because it was relevant to American slavery laws.
