The exact year Hamelt was written is not clear, but it was at some point between 1599 and 1603. This is based on scholarly research of allusions and references Hamlet allegedly contains to other contemporary works of the time. In Shakespearean times, probably around 1599.

Hamlet was first published in 1603, in what is called the "First Quarto". Scholars think that this was a reconstructed text made by one of the actors, possibly the one who played Barnardo, because sometimes it is similar to the texts we are used to, and sometimes wildly different, such as in the line "To be or not to be, ay that's the point." The second quarto appeared the next year, with a much more familiar text.

Hamlet was first printed in 1603. This is like publishing in modern day time but as many of his audience could not read and had so little money, they did not buy his plays; only watched.
