Yes this story is not an original work of fiction, it is almost a detail for detail rewrite of the story of Paul Wayment, and his son Gage. You can read Paul's story (see related link) and decide for yourself.

Perhaps. However, the Special Forces "Colonel" who claims that the story was based on his experiences, was in fact a member of the Coast Guard Reserve, and never served in Special Forces. This has been confirmed thru Freedom of Information Act requests and members of the real Special Forces community.

The only Special Forces in the United States military is the U.S. Army Special Forces-Green Berets/SF (18 series). Everyone else is considered special operations.

The Coast Guard has Rescue Swimmers, and Special Boat Units (SBU kind of like the navy). They also have specialized marksman.

No. It is based on a real legend, the legend of the Sawney Bean Family. According to the legend, a man called Sawney Bean was the leader of a sort of village of wild, feral cannibals who lived in the Scottish wilderness in the 1700s.

However, most reputable historians today do not believe that Sawney Bean ever existed.

yes, Trust is inspired by a similar online predator story that took place in Chicago. The events in the movie are very alike to the ones that actually happened but instead, "charlie" organized a plane ticket for "Annie" and she flew to California!

hope this helps
