Big Bird is officially six years old, permanently. This is so that his view of the world is always childlike and he can ask the questions children want to ask and experience the world in the same way they do.

However, he is rather older than this in terms of how long he's been around. His first appearance on Sesame Street was November 10th 1969, so he's heading for his fortieth birthday.

His body is a different age again. He started off as a different looking bird to the one we see now, with less feathers on his head and body. The suits are worn by the puppeteer controlling him, so he gets sweaty and baked by studio lighting, and he does so much running about and sitting in grubby places that he starts to look the worse for wear. He has also caught on fire, so that the puppeteer Caroll Spinney had to be rescued. So he has had a lot of different bodies, and there are foreign 'Big Birds' too that look completely different to suit their market, so in terms of his skin, he's probably not even six!
