What is the significance of the large elephant in the Les Mis movie..Don't remember seeing an elephant in stage play?

"The large elephant" is the Elephant of the Bastille. It was a monument in Paris that existed between 1818 and 1864. It was conceived in 1808 by Napoleon, and was supposed to be made out of bronze and placed in the Place de la Bastille. However, only the plaster full-scale model was built. At 78 feet tall, the model became a recognizable structure. In the book version of Les Miserables, Gavroche and some other street urchins live inside the elephant. As for why it didn't show up in the stage play, I guess it just wasn't needed to tell the story.
