Forrest Gump had several things going on. He had a lower than average IQ which I don't think qualifies as a real disablity but can be a stumbling block on the road to success. He also had (most likely) scoliosis, or better known as 'curvature of the spine', hence the leg braces.

What is very clear from the movie is that not only is Gump an inspiration for the ability of rising above his shortcomings, is his ability to effect those around him to greater heights of humanity. All who came into Gump's orbit came away as better people for the experience. He truly touched those he came into contact with, no small feat in anyone's esteme.

I don't think so - I saw Forrest Gump as low in flashy, high-speed smarts but very high in common horse sense.
