When goku and vegeta first fought goku had to use kaioken x3 to keep up with vegeta but on N amek goku had reached truly great strength most sayians cannot reach and also goku became asuper sayian first and when goku fought majin buu vegeta admits that goku is the best actually he only used it to win not to keep up he wanted to use it to surpass vegeta they were tied in power at first well almost tied

Vegeta was stronger than Goku when they first meet in the beginning of the saiyan saga. goku was stronger, he's supposed to be the strongest fighter ever. Basically they are supposed to have the same power level because they can fuse. But Goku has advantages that make him stronger(spirit bomb, being turned to a kid). But Goku does die a lot more often! So depends how you look at it.

Both Goku and Vegeta were equally match but all four times they died, Goku trained in the other side but Vegeta didnt. So even when Goku was stronger than Vegeta, he still defeated Goku. The only reason why Goku won because he trained while Vegeta didnt. That proves Vegeta was stronger than Goku and even when Goku was stronger than him before there last fight, Vegeta still won. If Goku had not trained, Vegeta would of won.
