Pastoral and agricultural activity are the major foundation for New Zealand's economy. Significant proportions of the other industries are either engaged in direct support of them (such as the Fertilizer works, and machinery supply) or are engaged in upstream processing of the primary products. (Wine industry, ice cream, baking.).

New Zealand has little heavy industry, though there are resource processing industries such as the Aluminium smelter, and the steel works.

The service industries are probably over represented in New Zealand.
