Is Sweden divided into provinces

There are provinces ("landskap") in Sweden, but they are remnants of ancient times and serve no administrative purpose, so they are not comparable to Canadian provinces. Instead, from the government point of view, the country has long been divided into counties ("län"), each with a governor as the top regional government official.

Still, many Swedes identify very strongly with their native landskap and typically mention it rather than the corresponding län when asked where they live or hail from. Dialects are also closely identified with landskap.

In 1634 these provinces were replaced by counties and today there are 21 counties.
