Yes, Toto is a male dog in original 1900 book edition of 'The Wizard of Oz'. In the very first pages of the first chapter, Toto is described as '... not gray; he was a little black dog, with long, silky hair and small black eyes that twinkled merrily on either side of his funny, wee nose'. But the role in the beloved 1939 frilm version is played by the female Cairn terrier Terry [1933-1944].

In the original 1900 book edition of 'The Wizard of Oz', Dorothy Gale had a pet dog whom she called Toto. In the book, Toto was a male dog. But in the beloved 1939 film version, the part was played by Terry [1933-1944], a female black Cairn Terrier.

"I guess the real female dog was more photogenic than the fictional male dog." - Not Derdriu Marriner
