Most oases contain fresh water. However, there are a number of deserts that contain salt lakes or pools of water that are high in mineral content and these can be toxic to any plant or animal wishing to use them. A hiker in the desert should beware of pools of permanent water they encounter in the desert that are crystal clear with no sign of plants such as algae and no insects in or on the water. That's a good sign that the water is toxic.
