Hamlet was the "hero," and certainly in the tragic sense, but he is also perhaps an anti-hero. Although Hamlet is probably the closest thing that the play has to a hero, it is more accurate to say that the play is not so one-dimensional as to be a conventional "hero" story. After all, it is a tragedy.
"The Hero's Journey" is a literary term which describes a character who typically begins the story as an "everyday" or "normal" person but through various trials, tribulations and adventures he becomes a greater individual. The variety of the hero can range from the very simple (ie. Billy Madison) to the supernatural (ie. Neo in The Matrix). In Star Wars there actually exists a few "Hero's Journeys".Within the original trilogies (Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back & Return of the Jedi), Luke Skywalker is a classic example of "the Hero's Journey". He is an normal teenager, living with his Aunt and Uncle, and dreams of leaving his home in search of more excitement than his tasks as a moisture farmer on Tatoonine provide. Suddenly, after the purchase of R2D2 & C3PO and subsequently Obi Wan Kenobi, he finds himself facing tremendous adversity and through it all he becomes a greater individual...a hero. Han Solo also fits the "Hero's Journey" as he evolves from a selfish scoundrel to a Naval General who finds his true love in Leia Organa.Within the entire Star Wars saga (all six episodes) Anakin Skywalker also is a classic example of "the Hero's Journey".

Star-crossed lovers can be found in the "Meeting with the Goddess" stage of the hero's journey. This archetype represents a powerful and often tragic love that transcends boundaries and obstacles presented on the hero's journey. The lovers may inspire and aid the hero in achieving their quest or bring an element of emotional depth and sacrifice to the hero's journey.
