Child abuse and endangerment are allied topics- possibly covered by the same laws- Child endangerment could involve having kids performing a hazardous carnival-type stunt- regardless of whether something goes wrong. Neglect involves neglect- the absence of care and underfeeding, not providing for clothing properly, etc- and is somewhat harder to prove than abuse- Abuse can take many forms. Stop and think- kids are so naive- they will even swallow such things as , say a Gym teacher bouncing volleyballs off their backs as some sort of joke- which adults would dismiss =angrily! as assault and battery. Numerous punitive tactics are employed on kids- such as knuckle soup- and the people who do it are smart to hit areas which do not naturally bruise or can absorb plenty of pain without physical traces- Imagine Knuckle Soup being doled out for a parking violation! It should not hurt to be a child- that slogan is quite correct in theory= one wishes it was in practice.
What's your excuse for child abuse?
The school calls social services to report child abuse not the parents. Specially if the child abuse is being done by the parent.
The legal definition of child abuse can be complex and is determined by state law. Many states have included forms of "emotional abuse" under their definitions of child abuse, so you can imagine how tricky that interpretation can be. Note also the difficulty state legislatures have had in respecting religious practices that rely on prayer or other alternatives to traditional medicine, particularly when the subject of the alternative approach is a sick child. For a more definitive answer to your question, find your state's statutes on the internet and do a search using the terms child abuse or neglect.

Difficult to answer simply. No, not in a legal sense. Attempted murder is a completely different offence. Of course the attempted murder of a child IS abuse but the charge is different, it may also be an additional charge. Being charged with child abuse is not the same as being charged with the attempted murder of a child.
