He was raised Roman Catholic, and was first exposed to the LDS Church at the age of 18 when he briefly had a returned Mormon Missionary as a roommate.

Later in life, after a divorce and becoming an alcoholic and drug user, he met his current wife, Tania, at a bar. Eventually she agreed to marry him on one condition - they share a common faith. The two went "church shopping" and eventually visited a congregation of the LDS church at the urging of a friend. The two joined the church in October 1999, along with Glenn's daughters from his previous marriage, Hannah and Mary.

There are several articles and YouTube interviews discussing Glenn Beck's conversion to the Church. He also has released a DVD about his conversion entitled "Glenn Beck: An Unlikely Mormon" available from Deseret Book and other online retailers.

I do know that he has had a Temple Recommend in the past, as I have heard him discuss attending the Temple and his experience being sealed to his wife.

As a fan, I have never heard mention of him doing anything that would even warrant discipline, let alone excommunication, and I'm quite sure he would have mentioned something if he were excommunicated.
