In American English, that is called "bareback riding," so perhaps "horseback riding" implies the difference between riding with or without a saddle. Answer:yes, you can ride a horse without a saddle as well as without a bridle too. called bareback and its really fun, especially swimming with your horse! I agree,I loved swimming with some of my horses. But be careful..not all horses canswim!!Most definitely! It is much more difficult to keep your balance but can be done. Why is it called horseback riding and not simply horse riding?

The term "horseback riding" emphasizes the rider's position on the horse's back, which is a key aspect of the activity. "Back" indicates that the rider is on the horse's body, distinguishing it from other forms of interaction with horses, such as leading or grooming. The phrase has historical roots and has become the standard terminology in equestrian contexts. Using "horse riding" could imply a broader range of activities that don't specifically involve riding on the horse's back.
