It depends...If you have the movie, and you want another copy just in case then that is PROBABLY legal. But if you don't have the movie and you make a bunch of copies and keep one and sell the other to people for money, then it is TOTALLY illegal.

For the same reason it's illegal to leave a restaurant without paying for your meal, or shoplift, or carjack someone. You're taking something of monetary value, without paying for it. It's called stealing.

A restaurant buys the ingredients for the food with their own money, and the chefs work very hard to make the ingredients into tasty dishes. So if you want to eat their food, you have to pay them, in compensation for the money they spent and the hard work they did.

The people who make movies invest a lot of money and hard work into it. So if you want to see the movie, you have to pay them, in compensation for the money they spent and the hard work they did.

You wouldn't expect to be able to get into a movie theater without paying for your ticket. Nor would you expect Blockbuster to start handing out free DVDs. So why would you expect to be able to watch a movie online without paying for it?

It is illegal to download free movies because they are being sold at a price in normal stores, therefore they are not free. It is called pirating and stealing because you are taking a paid movie for free.
