No it is not normal. Most likely there is a reason, you just have not seen or heard it yet. His hormones are raging, he's on drugs, his girlfriend has dumped him, he doesn't know what to do with his life, he found out something about his family or parents that he had rather not known, the list goes on and on.
Be there for him as a friend, gently and quietly. Maybe he'll open up, but don't count on it.

No matter conscious or unconscious thought.Maybe you didn't some of your own strange acts, that because they come out from your unconscious thought. The teenager you mentioned here "Acting out of character" hint people around him/her that he/she doesn't want to play his/her own role any more. He/she hate his/her previous life. So, there must be a stimulation forcing him/her change. So, he/she choosed another role, but you who care about him/her want to recover his/her old role. So you should take that teenage to a professional therapist, parent,as part of his/her current life which he/she hates, can't help him/her.
