It is.
Character
Films give people emotions because throughout the movie it makes you feel something. This can come from the characters, theme of the movie, or something else that just connects with you during the movie. For example, if in a movie a character that you really liked dies, this makes you feel sad because you really liked the character and connected with them in some way. You could've been like the character, they reminded you of someone, liked their motives, etc. Just different things in the movie connect with us and make us feel special in way that gives us emotions.

Nonlinear, since there are character flashbacks throughout the movie.
Character
When you are watching a movie and the main character pours a bowl of "cheerios" or you see a bottle of "Tide" laundry soup in the background. Or when someone in a movie mentions something like "Myspace" or "Youtube". That is product placement.
Is Jane a character from a movie or something? What movie are you referring to?
