On reading the Crimes Act, it appears that your own attempted suicide is not illegal, but if you aid, abet, counsel etc another to do so, and they do, then you may be liable (s179).
Also if you make a suicide pact with someone else then you may be liable (s180).
The answer to this of course can only be an opinion, and other people no doubt will have other opinions. But nowadays, nearly all Western Developed countries (such as NZ) consider the death penalty to be barbaric, and a form of revenge instead of justice, with no place in modern societal criminology. Other concerns include mistakenly executing the wrong person. Even the USA (one of the last such countries to still execute people) is moving away from using it. The USA State of Maryland started the process to cancel (repeal) their death penalty law just today (6 March 2013). Six other states in America have stopped executing people in the last six years.
Another reason that NZ shouldn't introduce the death penalty is that it was only ever considered when gaced with exceptionally high (out of control) murder rates. General crime rates in New Zealand are getting lower every year, with last year (2012) being the lowest since electronic records began. There were a total of 34 murders in New Zealand in 2011 with more than half of them (20) committed by family members (and thus unlikely to pose a continuing threat to the general public). This number is pretty low and getting lower each year. I'd say that New Zealand doesn't have the problem that the death penalty is supposed to solve.
