Not even close. Think about it. Gravity focuses on the destruction of an American shuttle while in orbit. Two American shuttles have been destroyed: STS-51-L Challenger exploded and broke apart 72 minutes after liftoff 28 January 1986; STS-170 Columbia broke apart during re-entry 1 February 2003. Both were within Earth's atmosphere. Additionally, the movie shuttle Explorer STS-157 never existed in the fleet (active US shuttles were Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavor), and the last mission was STS-135 on 8 July 2011.

Complete fiction.
