No, of course it is not real. Killer living vines? Don't you think that would've made the newspapers, before it became a feature-length movie?

Not every movie is based on a true story. I see questions on this site every single day, asking whether or not fictional movies are "real." You don't seem to understand the concept of fiction. Fiction writers are perfectly capable of making up an imaginary story.

When a movie or book is based on a true story, it is almost invariably advertised as such. But you should remember that even movies/books that claim to be based on a true story are still sometimes not. Sometimes it's a hoax. For example, Fargo, the Blair Witch Project, and the Texas Chainsaw Massacrewere all advertised as true stories, when in fact they are completely fictional. Other times, a movie/book claims to be based on a true story, but the author or authors have taken so many creative licenses that the real truth is far, far removed from the movie/book.

The movie the Ruins is based on the novel of the same name by Scott Smith. Which is brilliant by the way.
