No, it was not a musical. It had music in it, and some of the characters sang, but it was not a musical until they adapted it for Broadway.

Hairspray the musical is really good and I would go everyday if I had the money.

I disagree with you Hairspray is not that good, the songs are to long and it is way too old fashion. I like the concept though.

I agree with the first answer!! Hairspray is an AMAZING show!! The songs are upbeat..the theme is excellent and there is some humor. Definitely worth it, I would also go everyday if I could!!

Somewhat. John Waters based his fictional story on the Integration Of the Buddy Dean Show, a local dance show in 1960's Baltimore. Otherwise no. He made up a story around that event, which didn't end as happily. Buddy Dean was cancelled shortly after integrating. Source: Hairspray commentary track, by John Waters.

Hairspray was originally a movie by John Waters that was released in 1988. It was then adapted into a stage musical that opened in 2002. After that it was adapted into a movie that came out in 2007. They are currently working on making a movie sequel.
