Bolger was no rookie at the time of the Oz film. he had been in several movies up to that big Show. He was in Where"s Charley which had him in a transvestite role when this was really pushing the High Yellow. Motive for the gender bend ( in the story) was possibly draft evasion, it was made well before the war, maybe around l934-35)
