During the time of the story of Hanukkah, the Syrian-Greeks (at the instigation of the Hellenizers) forbade the Jews to study Torah. But the teachers and young children would hide and study Torah in secret, and if a greek soldier would find them, they would quickly hide their books and then pull out their dreidels and make believe that they were just playing a game and the soldiers would leave. Now it has become tradition to play with a dreidel on chanuka. Each side of the dreidel has another letter on it. Nun=nes- a miracle. gimmel=gadol- big. hey=haya-was. shin=sham- there. A big miracle happened there.
On Hannukah, special tops called "dreidels" are made traditionally out of clay. Gelt, the Yiddish word for gold, is the chocolate coins that are used when playing the dreidel game.
Lighting the menorah, saying certain prayers and blessings, singing the traditional songs, eating the customary foods, giving hanukkah gelt, playing with the dreidel.
A popular Hanukkah toy is the dreidel, a four-sided spinning top that is traditionally played with during the holiday. Each side of the dreidel is marked with a Hebrew letter—Nun, Gimel, Hei, and Shin—which stand for the phrase "Nes Gadol Hayah Sham," meaning "a great miracle happened there." Playing dreidel is a fun way for families to celebrate and engage with the holiday's themes of miracles and perseverance. In recent years, themed dreidels and games have become popular as gifts and toys for children during Hanukkah.
A dreidel is used for Hanukkah, the Jewish holiday that lasts eight days and comes in December. Dreidel is actually a game; here's what happens:There are four sides to a dreidel: shin (ש), gimel (ג), nun (נ), and hay (ה).There is gelt in the middle of the table; usually a lot, like 50 or so. Everyone gets a handful (gelt is usually chocolate coins wrapped in tin foil individually wrapped). If you don't have gelt, virtually anything will work: little candies, pennies, etc.Give everyone the same amount of gelt, like 5 or so.You take turns spinning the dreidel like a top. If you land on gimel, you get all the gelt...you win! Normally you keep playing and everyone puts in about three to start a new round. If you get hay, you get half the gelt in the middle. If you get nun, you get NOTHING. If you get shin, you put one gelt in the middle again.Dreidel never really ends...you just keep playing. If you run out, technically you're out, but if you play with little kids it's better to just give them 3 gelt and continue playing. You go around the table in a circle and everyone spins the dreidel one time on their turn.
