After Disney released "home on the range" in 2004 and it performed almost $10 million dollars under budget, Walt Disney Animated Studios concluded to cease producing 2d animated films as they were too costly to be profitable anymore, however this decision was semi revoked in 2006 when the company bought pixar animation studios and Ed catmull and John Lasseter were put in charge of the animation studios.

The return to 2d animated films in Princess And The Frog is thought to be semi experimental, as a test to see wether the new studio formation can manage to produce another profitable 2d film.

Sadly the Princess and the Frog is currently performing unexpectedly poorly amd as such the chance for a cinematic sequel is low.

one chance is that a sequel may be released as a direct to DVD feature which are cheaper in their lack of promotions and often lack of particularly intricate film making features
