Ive actually found out it kinda is. It was a conterversal topic that was all over the news at one time- my mom told me, and remembers. The girl did fight for the rights of her own body, and not to be her sisters " keeper." Everything else is fictional though. That's what people mean by its based on true events.
That story is not true, it is totally fictional but there are a lot of incidents like that in which people conceive a child unnaturally because of 80% chance of a match being found, compared to a 20% chance from a brother or sister conceived naturally.
So it will be fair to say that the story isn't true but the plot is true and is based on a lot of true stories.
