He spoke up for a change towards greater equality between people, which is hero stuff.
But that also meant that he was pushing for a change in society, and there's always a bit of trouble involved with that.
These days, most agree that it was trouble worth having, but at the time not all thought so.
What defines a true hero, is that he or she is willing to protect others without selfishness. Also they must be brave and smart and kind. If not for kindness, they would be a villain.

He went to Oslo, Norway to give his acceptance speech on 10 December 1964. At the time, this award was very controversial in the southern United States, where Dr. King was regarded as a trouble-maker rather than a hero.
