King Louis XVI started the French Revolution. Then Maximillion Robespierre led the Reign of Terror by bringing in the Guillotine, towards the end of the Revolution. It was considered to be in the realm of a popular uprising in search of leadership. There were plenty of volunteers for the role and it took some time to sort out the survivors.
Maximilien Robespierre was a law student (a very good one). He worked as a criminal judge and eventually became a successful advocate and chose overwhelmingly to represent the poor. During court hearings he was known to often advocate the ideas of the Enlightenment and argue for the rights of his clients. Later in his career he also became interested in literature and society and came to be regarded as one of the best writers and well-liked young men of Arras. When King Louis XVI later announced new elections for all provinces, this allowed Robespierre to run for the position of deputy for the Third Estate
