Pride and Prejudice is the best known and loved of Jane Austen's novels, focusing on the concept of love during the late 18th century in England. It is a story of romance between the spirited and lovely but poverty-stricken Elizabeth, and the pompous and proud yet intriguing aristocrat Mr. Darcy.

Pride and Prejudice was a movie released in theaters in 2005 starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen. While its plot is closer to that of the original novel than that of the 1940 film, it is not quite as close as the 1995 miniseries. (There were other productions, but they were inferior to all these three, I believe.)

This was a film I personally liked very much, but not nearly as much as the 1995 miniseries. I liked Keira Knightley's performance, and also the performances of other actors, particularly Rosamund Pike, who played Jane Bennet.

I think there were a few places where the directing and cinematography were brilliant, notably in a scene in the ball at Netherfield, in which a single camera went, without cuts, through the house, from room to room, following a number of different people as they moved and talked for several minutes in a sort of monolithic montage.

On the other hand, I thought the action was to quick. And in several places it was unreasonably abrupt. Bingley is portrayed as stepping suddenly into a room where a young woman is sick in bed, knocking only after entering. Darcy opens the door to a room at Hunsford equally abruptly, also without knocking. Intrusions of this type would not have been tolerated at the time. The abruptness of some actions is also found in other parts of the film, and never seems to come off well.

It portrays the Bennet family as rather seedy, living in a house that needs paint and is somewhat messy. Presumably the reason is that the family is land poor, or some such thing. This is not what Jane Austen intended, which was more accurately portrayed in the other films.

Also there places where the language was just wrong. Jane Austen, I think, would not have tolerated having Elizabeth say something like, "We misjudged him, Papa, me more than anyone." This one made me cringe, though I think only a few people noticed it, because the only people Jane Austen ever allowed to make grammatical errors were those she wanted to portray as ignorant or uneducated.

The feeling of the film, which was romantic, was an interesting contrast to the neoclassical feeling of the 1995 miniseries. One of the things that made this even more interesting is that the 1995 production had costumes of about 1810, but the 2005 movie used costumes from about 1795 or 1798. This did not bother me at all, and I thought it rather effective. (The 1940 film was set sometime in the 1830s or 1840s, and rather anachronistic.)
