The story takes place between 1948 - 1973. A retired Jewish lady in the States finds it difficult to drive herself around safely, so her son hires an African-American chauffeur. The theme of Driving Miss Daisy is the friendship and trust that grows between Miss Daisy, the elderly lady, and Hoke, the chauffeur, particularly having to suffer the various prejudices around them.
They agree that they are too old to be anything but friends.
Miss Daisy ends up being put in a nursing home. Her house was sold to other people but Hoke always came to visit her.
