Approaches have been made by the government to adopt a sustainable future. In 1977, this was achieved the 'Desert Development Programme'. Its aims are to restore the ecological balance by harnessing land, water, livestock and human resources. In Rajasthan, they have been concerned with developing forestry and addressing the issue of sand dune stabilisation.

The sand dunes in the Thar Desert are always mobile. In some areas they are a threat to farmland and roads. Stabilising sand dunes is tricky, but putting blocks of trees and fences down prevents this.
