Up to a point the title character, who has super powers ( as does her paramour, Bert) is something of an English-Flavored Jane Addams type. Unlike JA, she has a tendency to scorn religion and this is shown to advantage in the movie- which shocked my Mother! Mary and the kids are involved in a walking tour of London. They are immediately opposite a large and famous church ( it is identified in the film as Saint Paul"s Cathedral). Ok. a storm erupts. instead of taking the kids into the church, which would get them out of the weather and in a safe environment, she starts some wand-waving magic and conjures up a fantasy merry-go-round at a Carnival in a clear-weathered but nonexistent lot) they never visit the church. Isn"t that putting the knock on Religion? This occurs in the movie version.
