To free the slaves to Africa as opposed to the US. The country of Liberia was formed in 1822 by a colonization society in the United States as a homeland for freed slaves. It was the first independent African republic. Monrovia, the country's capital city, was named after U.S. President James Monroe, who arranged for its founding. The name Liberia comes from the Latin phrase which means free land.
