The Black Codes were passed to ensure a compliant and subservient slavery system under white rule. The laws removed any rights slaves had to humane treatment by literally giving slave owners the "godlike" decision of life or death over another human . If a slave owner claimed a slave challenged or resisted him, he could use beatings, torture, rape and even murder without any fear of repercussion.
